Expedition Overview & Significance

Discovered by a French archaeological team in 2002, Laas Geel (meaning "Camel Waterhole") contains the oldest and best-preserved Neolithic rock art in the Horn of Africa. Perched on granite rock shelters overlooking the confluence of two dry wadis, these 10 vibrant caves display polychrome paintings of crowned sacred cows, ancestral pastoralists, domestic dogs, and wild antelopes that date back between 5,000 and 10,000 years. The vivid natural mineral pigments (ochre, red hematite, and white lime) remain astonishingly pristine.
